Olga Girya: Purposely Creating Your Own Problems

Olga Girya: Purposely Creating Your Own Problems

One of the surprises of the women’s tournament was the defeat of the candidate in the Russian Team, Olga Girya (2441) by the international master from Mongolia Altanulzi Enhtuul (2153). Rarely after such a defeat is a chess player prepared for commenting, but Girya is a true professional and has given the reason for her misfortune especially for our site.

- What was going on?

- Sometimes in life it happens that you love to create yourself problems. You can’t say that that underestimated my opponent, but for some reason consciously went in an inferior position. I saw that this continuation wasn’t the best, but made the move anyway.

- That sounds infuriating.

- Well, it’s history now, tomorrow is a new day.

- How do you like the tournament atmosphere this year?

- I really like the Moscow Open. There are always a lot of interesting people, I really enjoy playing. Now, it seems, I need to add some reliability.

- All the same, you are finding the strength to smile.

- I’m sure it’s not that convincing. [shaking head]

- Right now you are one of the candidates for the national team, after the Kosintsev sisters declined participating in the World Team Championship. How do you view your chances?

- It’s a team where there will be three candidates for one position. Aside from me, there will be Nastia Bodnaruk and Sasha Goryachkina. It’ll be later when the coach finally decides which of us will go to the tournament.

- You still have six rounds to fix the situation in the tournament and show the coaches that you are the one the team needs.

- I’ll do my best.
